Elon Musk Offers to Buy Path of Exile 2 After Character Death

Billionaire Claims He'll Make Permadeath 'More Democratic'

Following the permanent loss of his high-level character in Path of Exile 2's hardcore mode, Elon Musk has announced an unsolicited $8 billion bid to acquire Grinding Gear Games, the game's developer.

"Path of Exile 2 is the digital town square for gaming excellence," Musk tweeted at 3:47 AM. "Permadeath mechanics are a fundamental threat to humanity's survival, right up there with AI and people who don't let me win. That's why I'm offering 3x market value to save civilization."

Hours after his character "Percy_Verence" died at rank 7 on the hardcore leaderboards, Musk unveiled plans for a "Hardcore Premium Plus" subscription at $8 per month. "Freedom isn't free," he posted, "but character resurrection is just $7.99 plus applicable taxes."

When Grinding Gear Games rejected both the acquisition offer and subscription proposal, Musk challenged lead developer Chris Wilson to a cage match. "The future of permadeath will be decided in the octagon," Musk tweeted. "Also, I'm moving all servers to Texas because New Zealand's gaming regulations are too woke and their time zone is biased against American billionaires."

Industry analysts note the erratic behavior follows accusations that Musk had paid professional gamers to level his character. "We've seen this pattern before," said gaming economist Marcus Rodriguez. "When Twitter hosted his jet tracking account, he bought the platform and banned it. When Tesla stock dipped, he bought more Tesla. Now his character dies and suddenly he claims it violates the First Amendment.

Musk's latest tweet storm announced that all future game expansions will be designed via Twitter polls. "First poll: Should fireballs respect free speech?" he posted at 4:23 AM, followed by, "The Constitution clearly protects our right to keep and bear immortal characters. This is what the founding fathers intended."

At press time, Musk was spotted posting patch notes for his proposed "free speech" version of the game, which notably includes removing all chat filters and renaming the hardcore death mechanic to "temporary strategic character reassignment."
